'The Mandalorian and Grogu' | Anatomy of a scene

Director Jon Favreau narrates a sequence from his film, starring a character voiced by Martin Scorsese.

I'm Jon Favreau and I'm the director of “The Mandalorian and Grogu.” So this is Hugo's. It's a food truck in “Star Wars.” That character is Hugo Durant, based on the title of Scorsese's film “Hugo,” and that character is voiced by Martin Scorsese. We recorded his dialogue and filmed a video reference, and the character design and animation were inspired by the radio play we put together from all his improvisation and performances. This truck was a practical truck that we built, but the sandwich itself and the character are both digital. Roy Choi, the chef I worked with on the movie “Chef,” was a food consultant on this and came up with an actual recipe for that sandwich. It's called carne frita and it's kind of like a grilled spam sandwich. And what is poured on top is the filling of a hairy egg. This is a callback to episode two of the first season of “The Mandalorian.” [LAUGHS] “Something funny?” “Yes, yes, everyone… Everyone knows Rotta the Hutt!” And now he points out where he might find Rotta the Hutt. And we could see that those posters are inspired by the period movie look of an old boxing or wrestling flyer.
