Irish singer Sinead O’Connor died of natural causes, the London coroner’s office said Tuesday.
Ms O’Connor, 56, was found dead at a residential property in London in July. Shortly after, the local coroner announced that they would perform an autopsy on her body.
In a brief statement Tuesday, the coroner said “Mrs O’Connor died of natural causes.” The coroner said they had “therefore ceased to be involved in her death”. No further details were given about her cause of death.
Best known for her performance of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U.” Mrs. O’Connor became global star in the 1990s, not only for his music, but also for his political provocations, on and off stage. The most memorable, Ms. O’Connor tore up a photograph of Pope John Paul II during a “Saturday Night Live” performance in 1992 to protest child sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church.
In an assessment of O’Connor’s career for The New York Times, pop critic Jon Caramanica said the singer “was something greater than just a pop star.”
She “was a fervent moralist, an uncompromising voice of social progress, and someone who considered stardom, and its polished, polished limits, to be a kind of disease,” Caramanica wrote. “She was also a fiercely gifted singer,” she added.
