Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of Sawan.
After 24 hours, i.e. one day, the Rakhi can be untied and removed. Many people remove Rakhi on the occasion of Janmashtami.
Raksha Bandhan is a popular festival in India. On this day, sisters tie rakhi on the wrist of their brothers at an auspicious time. Performing Raksha Bandhan rituals during Rahukal and Bhadra period should be avoided. According to the Hindu Panchang, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on Purnima or a full moon day during Sawan. This year, Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on August 19. Brothers keep the Rakhi tied on their wrists for days, while some do it for years. In such a situation, many wonder when to untie the rakhi after Raksha Bandhan. Kashi-based astrologer Chakrapani Bhatt shares his expert advice on the muhurat and the right time to untie the rakhi.
According to Kashi astrologer Chakrapani Bhatt, this time the festival of Raksha Bandhan falls on Monday, August 19. The auspicious time to tie Rakhi on Rakshabandhan is from 1:30 pm to 9:08 pm, as per media reports. Due to the Bhadra period in the morning, sisters should avoid tying rakhi during this time. Chakrapani Bhatt says that the festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on the full moon day of Sawan. The astrologer states that the Rakhi should not be removed for at least 24 hours. After 24 hours i.e. one day, that Rakhi can be untied and removed. In many places, people remove the Rakhi on the occasion of Janmashtami.
There is no specific day or time to remove the rakhi. There is no mention of this in the scriptures either. It is believed that if the rakhi is kept tied for many days, it becomes impure and leads to negativity in life.
After Sawan Purnima, the Pitru Paksha starts from Bhadrapada Purnima. It is not considered auspicious to keep the rakhi till that time, so it should be removed. The Pitru Paksha will start on 17th September. It leads to impurity, which generates even more negative energy. After Rakshabandhan, open the Rakhi and immerse it. You can keep that Rakhi in a box with you or you can tie it on a Dev tree. On the day of Rakshabandhan, sisters should choose a Rakhi that is made of raw thread, silk, etc. Do not wear Rakhi made of plastic. Avoid brown and black coloured Rakhi.
