Summer is here with the three-day Memorial Day weekend.
Memorial Day, celebrated on the last Monday in May each year, unofficially marks the beginning of the warmer months with a long weekend known for barbecues, yard work and pool openings to honor the day of remembrance of service members who died in service.
The solemn day, recognized as one of the 11 federal holidays of the calendar year, is celebrated throughout the country with flags flown at half-mast according to established national tradition. It is one of the few times that flags are lowered in all states.
However, it is up to individual employers to decide whether to offer time off or additional pay for working on federal holidays.
