A man has revealed that he uninvited his sister to his wedding after she ruined the romantic proposal he had planned.
The husband-to-be, who was wondering if he had made the right decision, detailed the situation on popular Reddit confession forum Am I The A**hole, asking anonymous readers if they thought he was wrong. The 29-year-old Reddit writer began by explaining that he had found the perfect match for his 28-year-old girlfriend at the place where they had their first date.
However, the romantic encounter on a “secluded beach” did not go as planned thanks to his sister.
“I had everything ready: flowers, a little picnic and a photographer hiding nearby to capture the moment,” she admitted. “When the day came, my sister (32F) insisted on joining us. She said she wanted to take some spontaneous photos of us before the proposal.”
The Reddit user agreed, hoping it would be more of a help than a distraction, but soon regretted his decision. On the day of his proposal, his sister began acting controlling, trying to steer the engagement.
“My girlfriend could tell something was wrong and the mood was getting ruined,” the Reddit user explained. To make matters worse, her sister pulled the ring box out of her pants pocket and yelled, “Surprise! Look what she’s going to do!”
“I managed to salvage the proposal somehow, but the moment was ruined,” the original poster confessed. Fortunately, his girlfriend said yes, but the newly engaged couple agreed that the proposal was “ruined.”
When he confronted his sister, she seemed to find the situation funny. “She just laughed, said she was ‘just trying to help’ and that I was overreacting,” the Reddit user noted.
In a later message, the groom said that his sister had always displayed “attention-seeking behavior” and that he and she had fought before. Because of this and the proposal incident, he and his fiancée decided not to invite his sister to their wedding.
“We wanted our day to be about us, without any unnecessary drama,” the Reddit user wrote. “When my family found out, they were furious. My parents called me heartless and my sister plays the victim, saying I’m tearing the family apart over a ‘little prank.’”
Now, the Reddit user feels conflicted about the decision. However, readers showed overwhelming support and admitted that her sister did not deserve to be included on the big day.
“Your sister is out of line. I’m so sorry you have to deal with her nonsense,” one Reddit reader commented, while another said, “Your sister seems like an attention-seeking narcissist. You and your fiancée need to present a united front and make it clear that your sister will not be invited.”
“It wasn't a joke and I would tell anyone who pressured me that they were just making things worse,” a third agreed.
One outspoken person wrote: “You might want to consider eloping and only having friends attend your wedding. Your family will ruin your life to make it “fair” for your sister.”
