Los Angeles-based artist Saturn Risin9 talks about his unique sense of style

A bag becomes something completely different when worn by different personalities, similar to how no perfume smells the same on two different people. To test this idea, we invited four different artists to design the same bag in their personal style and lifestyle for a day, imagining places in Los Angeles where they would use it. Bag? The Acne Studios rivet wine box bag from the brand's spring/summer '24 collection. It felt like a bag that was sturdy enough to withstand a long day in Los Angeles and light enough not to drag you down.

In the second installment of the series, Saturn Risin9, singer, performer and DJ, takes the bag to Pirate Studios, where he practices DJ sets before the weekend. With the Acne bag in tow, the multihyphenate shows us how his personal style is a reflection of “ambition, being bold, being exciting and how to put those things together.”

Who are you and what do you do?

I am a multifaceted person. I am a performer, singer, DJ, I organize events. I have a charity, Rings Alliance, for trans and queer artists. We're still getting our footing, but you'll hear more about that soon.

Describe your personal style.

I have always been very rebellious. And my mom says that she knew the moment she got pregnant with me that I was just going to do whatever I wanted. I think my style reflects that. Even things that you would think I would care about, like trends, fashion standards, or music, never matter to me. If it hits me, I use it. And if it feels right I do it, because I can make anything work. I say it in life, as well as in my music and also in my style. I think my self, my work, and my personal style reflect someone who works very hard for themselves and by themselves. It's a reflection of ambition, of being daring, of being exciting, and of bringing those things together because it's truly extraordinary to do so in a world that doesn't champion it or embrace it. (I'm lucky to have found a community and personal world that does.) My style reflects that person and my effort to be cool and have fun.

Talk to me about coming up with an outfit around this Acne Studios bag.

Over the past few years I've been really into these really small bags that don't have a lot of space; I love the clutch size ones. So when I saw the bag I was excited because it was more spacious and had a rectangular shape, so I knew I could fit a lot of things in it, which meant I had more options for wearing things that would allow for a stylish look. [look]. I don't have to use pockets because my bag fits everything, so I wear these thigh-high boots. I definitely thought about flexible [the bag] It would be to go out or even travel because I don't like traveling with a lot of people. I like to have everything that I can fit in my bag and still be sexy, cute and ready to wear.

How does the sense of place influence the sense of style? How do you travel around Los Angeles with style in mind?

I'm usually into what I like to call butch products. I definitely like to be comfortable when traveling around Los Angeles, especially during the day; I'm not trying to pretend. I also don't want to be bogged down by the idea that dolls [trans women] You need to present yourself as super feminine or hyperfemme to get through life. Walkability isn't even a concern for me. I just try to be as comfortable as possible because I do a lot of things at all times. Why would I want to feel uncomfortable besides working as hard as I work? But there is nothing cuter than having a fabulous bag with you. Sweat or not, a great bag is a great bag. Actually, let me dress sillier and get out the acne bag.
