Lily Allen took her adopted dog back to the animal shelter after he ate her children's passports.

The 39-year-old explained that her children were unable to see their father for months because of the fiasco, as she said the dog had “ruined my life”.

“We actually adopted a dog, but she ate my passport and I took her back home,” she told her friend, host Steve Jones, on the show. Miss me? podcast that he usually presents with Miquita Oliver.

Although he did not mention which dog it was specifically, the Daily Mail The pet was reported to be a puppy named Mary that Allen adopted from a New York City-based charity in 2021.

Mary created her own Instagram page later that year, but posts abruptly ceased within a week or two.

“It ate all three of our passports and took our visas,” Allen recalled. “And I can’t tell you how much money it cost me to replace everything, because it was the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic and it was a logistical nightmare.”

The “Smile” singer, who lives in New York with her children and husband, Stranger Things Actor David Harbour was unable to travel to England, where his ex-husband and father of his two children, Sam Cooper, lives, due to the incident.

“And because my children’s father lives in England, I couldn’t take them to see their dad for four or five months, because this damn dog had eaten their passports,” she continued.

Allen said it wasn't just the passport incident that led her to make the decision to return the dog, explaining that the animal had behaved badly in general.

“Passports weren’t the only thing she was eating, she was a very badly behaved dog and I really tried hard with her but it just didn’t work out and the passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak,” she said.

The charity where Allen adopted the dog, Animal Haven, is the same shelter where Jon Stewart adopted his family dog, who died earlier this year.

The talk show host explained that her children had raised money for the charity through a bake sale before staff members presented them with a dog which they then adopted and kept until her death earlier this year.
