Kelly Rizzo has opened up about dating again after the death of her spouse.
The actress experienced this first-hand after the death of her husband Bob Saget two years ago. On January 9, 2022, Saget was found dead in his hotel room in Orlando, Florida, and a medical report concluded that he died from accidental trauma to the head. Rizzo is currently dating actor Breckin Meyer.
Rizzo recently took to Instagram to talk about how she processed being ready for another relationship. “Dating after losing your spouse. It’s crazy how controversial this topic is,” she begins her Instagram video.
“When I lost Bob two and a half years ago, even the idea of moving on – not moving on, moving on – was very anxiety-inducing. What would people think? What would my loved ones think? What would Bob’s loved ones think? What would the public think?”
She went on to list all the worries that were piling up in her head: “It’s a strange thing that I had to worry about. What would Bob think? Finally, who would want to date a widow? I hate that word.”
Rizzo said that when she made the decision to start dating again, many people had a positive reaction, despite some people who questioned it.
“I’ve actually been very lucky to have all the support in the world from my family and friends, from Bob’s family and friends. Yes, even the public has been lovely, except for a couple of negative comments,” she said.
“I was so lucky to find someone so kind, compassionate and understanding of the whole situation. Literally, someone who the joke is, ‘This is the only person on Earth Bob wouldn’t be this mad at.’”
Rizzo first confirmed she was in a relationship with Meyer in February, when the two were spotted together at a 2024 Grammy Awards viewing party. In her video, she made a point of making sure widows aren't judged for making the decision to date again.
“But the important thing is that there is no room for anyone to judge,” she said. “It is a very complex situation, with a lot of complicated feelings. Unless you have been through something like this, you don’t understand what it is like.”
She concluded: “If you have lost someone, you should know that you have a lot more support than you think. And if you have someone in your life who has lost someone and is going through the difficult time of trying to figure out the best way to move on, the best thing you can do is love them, support them and be there for them.”
This isn’t the first time Rizzo has spoken openly about her decision to date again. In March, Rizzo posted a TikTok addressing claims that she “moved on too quickly” with her new relationship.
In the video, she noted that most of the feedback she received was positive and that it can be difficult for people to fully understand her situation unless they have been widowed. “You just don't understand the incredibly complex, difficult and dynamic thoughts and feelings that come up during this whole process,” she said.
“At some point, when you think about dating again, just thinking about it makes you feel guilty, ashamed, horrible, but also lonely, so you want to do it.”
