Janmashtami is one of the most important Hindu festivals. On this day, people celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna, who is revered as the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to Hindu belief, Lord Vishnu takes on earthly incarnations to restore balance and righteousness whenever there is an increase in injustice and a decrease in dharma.

Janmashtami is celebrated annually on the Ashtami Tithi of Krishna Paksha during the month of Bhadrapada, which this year falls on August 26. Lord Krishna is said to have made his divine appearance during the Dwapar Yuga, the third of the four yugas in Hindu tradition. His purpose was to restore cosmic order in times of moral decay.

The traditional celebration of Janmashtami includes fasting, singing devotional hymns, dramatizations of scenes from Krishna's life and offering prayers at midnight, as this is believed to be the time of his birth.

In Hindu mythology, the child form of Lord Krishna, known as Bal Gopal or Kanha, is especially celebrated. Hence, one of the most revered traditions on this auspicious occasion is for parents to dress their children as Lord Krishna or Radha.   1. Dhoti and kurtaStart with a simple, traditional dhoti and kurta. For an authentic look, choose bright colors like yellow or orange, as Krishna is often depicted in these colors. Make sure the fabric is comfortable and breathable for your child.
  2. Peacock featherNo Krishna costume is complete without a peacock feather. Attach it to a mukut (crown) or headband to replicate Krishna's iconic look. Secure it securely so that it stays in place throughout the celebration.
  3. FluteKrishna is known as the divine flute player. Make sure to include a small, decorative flute that your child can carry around. Choose a lightweight flute that is easy for him to handle.
  4. Jewelry and accessoriesDecorate your child with traditional jewellery like necklaces, bracelets and anklets. A small waist sash (kamarband) will also complement the traditional attire. Opt for jewellery that is child-friendly and very light to avoid any discomfort.
