amã Stays and trails Ambika Vilas, Trivandrum
Ambika Vilas, a living heritage, was built in 1911 by Dr NK Krishna Pillai, a young aristocrat who trained as a surgeon and served the government and armies of the Travancore king, Moolam Thirunal Rama Varma VI.
The house was planned and built according to the principles of 'Thatchusastra', an ancient science of carpentry. At its core, Thatchusastra is based on the premise that every man-made structure has a life and personality of its own, which is derived from the inputs and materials used to build it. The bricks for the walls and the clay tiles for the roof and floor were of local origin and prepared on the premises. It is about ensuring that the building materials used blend harmoniously with the surroundings of the house.
The rooms are cool even in the hot summer months, due to the application of a mortar paste based on lime, plant extracts and eggs, to cover the walls. The terraces surrounding the house bring in the cool sea breeze and the long sloping roofs supported by wooden beams and pedestals protect the house from heavy monsoon rains. The thoomanam protects the terracotta roof and directs rainwater directly into the earth, replenishing groundwater.
Upon entering the house, you will find small miniature gardens, open to the sky, in the center of the house. These courtyards, known as 'anganam', are the heart of any house in Kerala. It is here that family members gather to eat, celebrate festivals or socialize. It is also a perfect place to watch the arrival of the monsoon.
A unique feature of Ambika Vilas is the perfect way in which the interior of the house merges with the garden, to create a holistic living space. It's hard to know where the house ends and the garden begins.
