Ghirardelli recalls hot chocolate and a dozen other mixed drinks over salmonella fears

Ghirardelli has recalled more than a dozen of its powdered drink mixes over fears that the products may be contaminated with salmonella.

Consumers should check their pantries to see if they have any hot chocolate or frappe mixes that are part of the recall, following the San Francisco chocolate company's announcement Monday.

Salmonella bacteria is a leading cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacteria can cause serious and, in some cases, fatal infections.

Healthy people infected with salmonella typically experience fever, diarrhea and vomiting, according to a company recall notice published by the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday. Young children, older people, and people with weakened immune systems can die from a salmonella infection.

Ghirardelli recalled the drink mixes after California Dairies, Inc. recalled powdered milk from the market over concerns of possible salmonella contamination. The powdered milk was supplied from a third-party manufacturer and was an ingredient in powdered drink mixes.

The chocolate company said it was issuing the recall “out of an abundance of caution” and that no illnesses had been reported so far.

“Neither we, our third-party manufacturer nor the powdered milk supplier have received any reports of illnesses or injuries related to this issue to date, and our own rigorous testing has not identified any affected powdered beverage mixes,” Ghirardelli said in a statement.

“Nothing is more important to us than the safety and quality of our products, and we are taking this step out of an abundance of caution,” the statement continued.

The recalled drink mixes are sold in bulk and are intended for food service, but some of the products may also have been sold to consumers online.
