Five summer shoe trends to take a step forward

Enter summer in style with some of the biggest footwear trends.

From tennis sneakers to chunky platform sandals, this summer's shoes combine comfort with bold styles.

Here are the shoes you'll see everywhere this season…

1. Merceditas

The versatile Merceditas return this summer in different versions: with single or double straps and different heel heights, from flat to high and with matte and patent leather uppers, says Simon Wilson, director of Deichmann.

The key style can be worn for any occasion: flat Mary-Janes can complete a casual daytime ensemble, while a heel can elevate an evening look.

Comfort is the style of the season with a sneaker revival for SS24. This chic yet sporty vibe is set to become a key trend, says footwear expert Paul Donnelly of Heavenly Feet.

“The athletic, minimalist luxe look celebrates crisp shirts, linen shorts, polos, and a pair of perfectly clean white sneakers or sneakers,” he says.

“Use lightweight soles and shoes that complement multiple color combinations and outfits. For maximum versatility, a pair of sneakers will offer all-day style points, or a comfortable pair of sandals will make it easy to wear during the day or night.”

3. Metallic appearance

Metallic panels are a key trend according to Wilson, who says you can rock them with both a casual sneaker and heels.

It's a bold option that you can choose to include subtlety with metallic panels along the sides of your sneakers or a statement shoe that you can make the focal point of your outfit.

4. Wedge sandals

Wedge sandals are a timeless summer shoe that can be combined with festive day and night looks.

Raffia wedge sandals are particularly in style as the weather warms, says Wilson, adding: “Some of the biggest trends we're seeing this summer are raffia and woven materials in a variety of styles, from espadrilles to heeled sandals”.

5. Bright and bold colors

Sparkly sandals are especially trendy, according to expert Rachel Clinkard, director of e-commerce at Charles Clinkard.

From lime and orange to bright pink, Clinkard says vibrancy is the way to go for SS24 footwear.

“For summer everything will be about bright colors,” he says.

“A pop of color in your shoes and accessories goes perfectly with a simple outfit.”
