When it comes to decorating your bedroom, it's easy to get lost in the choice of colors available.

Some shades are totally on trend, while others are specifically designed for a peaceful sleeping space.

And while mood boards and color palettes can inspire our creativity, interior designers have the expert knowledge of what will realistically work in a space, while also helping us visualize the aesthetic and what's trendy.

Here, paint and interiors expert Anjelica Delfino of V&CO Paint shares the bedroom colours loved by leading interior designers and why you should choose the same ones for an ever-on-trend aesthetic…

“Navy is such a timeless colour that it’s no wonder interior designers love using it,” says Delfino.

“It’s one of those shades that adds color to a room but also acts as a neutral. It’s very easy to live with – it’s not trendy, but it’s not boring either.”

She says the depth and versatility make it a great choice for the bedroom, as it can make a spacious room feel softer and more inviting.

“Although it is a darker shade, blue is generally associated with calm and is therefore a shade that interior designers love to use… a bold navy wall is timeless.”

Blushing Pink

A blush pink has an incredibly soft, chalky quality that you don't get with other shades of pink, making it ideal for bedrooms, Delfino notes.

“It brings a soft and balanced atmosphere to the home, while adding a touch of elegance and femininity to the spaces.

“It pairs well with a variety of colors and styles, providing versatility in design.”

She continues: “Plus, blush pink creates a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere, making it a great choice for both contemporary and traditional interiors.”

North-facing bedrooms and rooms are perfect spaces for pale pink, Delfino notes. “Plus, rooms filled with plants are where this color really comes to life.”

Greenish green

As Delfino points out, green is the color most associated with nature, symbolizing growth, harmony and freshness.

“Incorporating green is one of the top recommendations from designers looking to bring the calming and refreshing qualities of the outdoors inside.

“A very useful tip would be to paint the ceiling green. We spend so much of our lives looking at screens that we forget to look up, which is where the best things are. Ask any designer or tour guide!”

She says adding color and pattern to this neglected space completely changes the look and feel of a room. “You could simply paint a block or disk of color around a light fixture, or carry a strip of color along the wall and ceiling.”

Neutral lavender

Interior designers use soft lavender colour schemes in their own homes because this creates a calm and serene atmosphere, promoting relaxation and tranquillity, Delfino reveals.

“The lavender plant has long been associated with sleep; from its scent to its color, it is believed to be deeply relaxing.

“For designers, its subtle, muted tone adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to interiors while maintaining a fresh, modern appeal.”

Delfino continues: “A wall with a floral print in lavender tones would be an ideal choice for the bedroom, with sheer curtains in light lavender tones to match.”

Plum Plush

Plum is a popular choice among interior designers because it exudes richness and sophistication, adding depth and elegance to spaces, Delfino stresses.

“Its deep, luxurious tone creates a dramatic and inviting atmosphere, making it ideal for creating focal points or accent walls.

“Plum pairs well with a variety of colors, including neutrals and metallics, meaning it suits both modern and traditional structures.”

Rich colours, such as plum, evoke a feeling of heaviness and warmth, which is ideal for bedrooms, she explains. “Because of the depth of the colour, it works well as an accent wall or, in the case of smaller bedrooms, as an accent colour.”

Mellow Yellow

“Soft yellow is a popular choice because it brings warmth and joy to spaces, creating a welcoming and stimulating atmosphere,” says Delfino.

“Its subtle hue brightens rooms without being overwhelming, which also means it can be paired with a variety of accent colors and materials.”

It's a popular choice for bedrooms because it can bring light into a space when a room lacks natural light or is small, she adds.

“Interior designers love soft yellows because they pair so well with neutral tones and make the bedroom feel spacious and soft at the same time.”

Expert advice

When choosing a colour for the bedroom, she says the main thing to consider is the feeling that the colour conveys. “The bedroom should convey tranquillity, silence and peace.

“While it is still welcome to have fun with bedroom design, these qualities are essential for designers!”

So if you want to achieve an interior designer-approved bedroom, Delfino suggests incorporating these timeless hues into your color scheme.
