The company said in a statement that about 10% of its items in the United States use FD & C colors, synthetic additives that make many foods more visually attractive. Kraft Heinz brands that sell products with these dyes include Crystal Light, Kool-Aid, Mio, Jell-O and Jet-Puff, according to a Kraft Heinz spokesman.

The company eliminated the colors, preservatives and artificial flavors of its macaroni with Kraft cheese in 2016 and its Heinz ketchup has never used artificial dyes, according to Pedro Navio, president of North America in Kraft Heinz. It is not clear how the elimination of dyes will affect the company's business, since consumers could perceive that the products are healthier, but they can also be less attracted by more opaque colors.

The decision remains at the pressure of the US Food and Medicines Administration and the Department of Health and Human Services, directed by Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., for the food industry to withdraw from artificial dyes as part of a call from the Make America platform.

The FDA in April announced a plan to eliminate the use of oil -based synthetic dyes at the end of next year and replace them with natural alternatives. In addition to red No. 3 previously prohibited, other dyes that will be removed include the red dye 40, the yellow dye 5, the yellow dye 6, the blue dye 1, the blue dye 2 and the green dye 2, the FDA commissioner, Marty Makary, said at that time.

Kennedy said at that time that the FDA and the food industry have “an understanding”, not a formal agreement, to eliminate artificial dyes. The Secretary of Health and Human Services discussed the elimination of artificial food dyes during a meeting in March with the main food executives of companies such as Kraft Heinz, Pepsic North America, General mills, WK Kellogg, Tyson Foods, JM Smucker and the association of consumer brands, the main commercial group of the industry.

A Kraft Heinz spokesman said Tuesday that the company expects to associate with the administration “to provide quality foods, affordable and healthy for all.”

The impulse against food dyes had been building for years. In January, before President Donald Trump and Kennedy assumed the position, the FDA announced the prohibition of the use of red dye No. 3 in food and drugs ingested. The dye gives many sweets and cereals its bright red color, but it is also known that it causes cancer in laboratory animals. The FDA allowed food manufacturers to use red No. 3 for years, although the state of California had already banned the dye in 2023.

Kraft Heinz said on Tuesday that he has made more than 1,000 changes in recipes in the last five years to improve product nutrition.

“The vast majority of our products use natural colors or not, and we have been on a trip to reduce our use of FD & C colors in the rest of our portfolio,” said Navio. “Above all, we are focused on providing nutritious, affordable and great flavor foods for Americans and this is a privilege that we do not take lightly.”
