Winona Ryder stepped away from her acting career after her arrest for shoplifting in December 2001 and the backlash that followed.
In a new interview, he reflected on the impact of the arrest on his career, saying: Gift: “I left” to face the consequences of the arrest.
“I think I just logged out,” he added.
In the year 2000, the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice The actress was accused of stealing clothing valued at $5,500 in Beverly Hills, California.
In December 2001, she was convicted of grand theft and shoplifting, and her sentence included three years' probation, fines and community service. Stranger Things The star then stopped acting and moved to San Francisco.
The actress admitted that the arrest “definitely had a huge effect” on her career, but at the time she thought it was a simple mistake.
“He would always say, ‘Okay, this is just paperwork,’ and I would say, ‘Okay. ’ I was very confused,” she said.
She recalls being told she could end up in prison and says: “I remember being told I was going to prison. I was like, ‘What? What are you talking about?’”
Reflecting on the time after his arrest, he said: “There was a period where I wasn’t in season. It was like 10, 12, 15 years, and it coincided with everything that happened. [in her life] But then again, if you look at the period from 2000 to 2010, wow, it was the most degrading time to be a woman. Even popular people were participating in what seemed like it should be off limits.”
Ryder will next appear in the Beetlejuice sequel Beetle Beetle, which will hit theaters on September 6.
