Rich Homie Quan's father has spoken out about the Atlanta rapper's death, writing about his grief on social media.
Corey Lamar said in an Instagram Story Friday morning that he is in “excruciating pain,” less than a day after the Fulton County Medical Examiner confirmed the rapper (real name Dequantes Devontay Lamar) has died at age 33.
“Lord please please help me understand this,” Lamar’s father continued on Instagram. “Losing my son (my firstborn, my best friend). Lord please let this be a dream… Please pray for me and my family.”
She added: “I feel like I’ve been crushed into a million pieces.”
A representative for the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed to The Times on Thursday that Grady Memorial Hospital notified them of the rapper's death but did not release the cause of death.
News of Rich Homie Quan's death spread quickly on social media Thursday, prompting tributes from hip-hop artists including Playboi Carti, Boosie Badazz and Migos rapper Quavo.
“Never forget your smile and the path [you] “We talked and of course listened to music,” Boosie wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
Rich Homie Quan, who rose to prominence in Atlanta hip-hop alongside artists like Young Thug, was known for hits like “Lifestyle” and “Type of Way.” Tyga, Yo Gotti, Fetty Wap, Lil Wayne, Meek Mill and Nicki Minaj are among the rappers who have worked with the “Flex” artist.
Before the rapper's death, Rich Homie Quan's girlfriend Amber Williams told police she found the artist unresponsive, according to a recording of a 911 call obtained and published by Atlanta news outlet 11 Alive. In the recording, Williams can be heard calling for an ambulance.
“He never got up. I can’t feel his heartbeat, I can’t see him breathing,” she says in the recording. “He was foaming at the mouth.”
Williams has not directly addressed her boyfriend's death on social media, but she did share posts from friends and followers expressing support and privacy on her Instagram Story.
“I’m praying that God wraps his arms around you, sister,” read one post shared by Williams.
The medical examiner said in a statement Friday that he had performed an autopsy on the rapper. The cause and manner of death “are pending completion of laboratory studies and microscopic examination of tissue samples.”
