LONDON: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has arrived in London for a brief tour ahead of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.

The Prime Minister arrived at Luton Airport where he was welcomed by Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK Dr Muhammad Faisal and British government officials. He was accompanied by his son Suleman Shehbaz Sharif and Afzaal Bhatti, Pakistan’s new ambassador to Morocco.

The Prime Minister will leave for the US from London on September 23. In an interview with X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Shehbaz said, “I will be leaving for New York to represent Pakistan at the 79th United Nations General Assembly. I look forward to a week full of engagements.”

“During our interactions, we will address global issues, promoting peace, development and climate action,” he said.

“We will present Pakistan's perspective to the world,” the prime minister added.

A source close to the prime minister said he would spend Sunday in London at his Edgware Road apartment and would fly to New York on Monday morning. He has no official engagements on Sunday.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif made it clear on Friday that “the country will not compromise on its sovereignty.”

Addressing an event at the GHQ in Rawalpindi on the occasion of Defence and Martyrs’ Day, the Prime Minister stressed the importance of maintaining peace. “Nations lead to prosperity by embracing peace. Pakistan wants to have peaceful relations with its neighbours as maintaining peace is our top priority.”

“Pakistan has always played a positive role in maintaining stability in the region. The country has played an important role in trying to end the menace of terrorism,” he said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said: “Pakistan’s borders are in themselves a symbol of peace.”
