KARACHI: A fresh wave of monsoon rains has hit parts of Karachi, once again making the weather pleasant after the prevalence of humid conditions in the port city for days as the city administration has been instructed to dry up the accumulated rainwater.

Several areas including Nazimabad, Orangi Town, Federal B Area, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Malir received isolated heavy to moderate rainfall, as forecast by the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The PMD had predicted that Karachi was likely to receive heavy rain accompanied by thunder on Sunday, adding that it recorded 85 per cent humidity in the air in the morning.

According to the Met Office, one or two periods of heavy rain are expected in the city tonight, continuing until August 7.

Chief meteorologist Sardar Sarfaraz said today that the current spell of rains will clear up by tonight, but added that a fresh spell of rains will hit the city on August 13 or 14.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah chaired a meeting earlier in the day to review the situation in the metropolis following intermittent monsoon rains over the past few days.

Several low-lying areas will be inundated by the rainwater, a provincial government spokesman said in a statement issued by the Prime Minister's House.

The Prime Minister has instructed the authorities to make available machinery, where necessary, to drain the accumulated rainwater.

The Director General of the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said that dewatering machinery had been provided to the Karachi city administration.

Meanwhile, PMD has forecast thunderstorms or rain of light to moderate intensity in Tando Muhammad Khan, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Badin, Thatta, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar and parts of Shaheed Benazirabad districts under the influence of a westerly wave.
