Originally scheduled for September, when the ceremony is traditionally held, the Emmy Awards were postponed amid the historic dual strikes in Hollywood by the Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA that paralyzed the industry.

The writers had already been on strike for two months when the Emmy nominations were announced in July. The actors left shortly after. Rather than continue without writers to write the show or hosts to hand out awards, Fox decided to postpone the event until both labor disputes were resolved.
