The British Academy of Film and Television Arts dropped its list of 2024 film awards nominations early Thursday morning, and there are plenty of surprises among them. For example, while “Oppenheimer” dominates as expected, with 13 nominations, “Barbie” only gets five and is snubbed for best picture and director. But while the awards are voted on by industry professionals with a significant membership that overlaps with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the same criteria that makes SAG and other guilds good predictors of awards results), Oscar), the BAFTAs and the Oscars often go separately. ways when it comes to, say, the best movie.
Among this year's nominations, “Poor Things” comes in second with 11, but despite earning nods for best picture, best British film and adapted screenplay, it was snubbed for directing and actors not named Emma Stone. “Past Lives” received praise for its screenplay, lead actor Teo Yoo and best non-English-language film, in a sort of “Minari” conundrum, but not for best picture or its acclaimed lead actress, Greta Lee. nor by director Celine. Song. As expected, the German-language British film “The Hot Spot” is positioned in virtually every possible category, except, perhaps curiously, for best picture. It is in the prominent British film group, but does not join “Poor Things” in both.
American audiences will recognize almost all the names and films in contention for the non-British awards, with lead actress contender Vivian Oparah of “Rye Lane” a likely exception. Otherwise, the acting nods echo those heard during awards season, notably sounding a lot like the SAGs, aside from the inclusion of Fantasia Barrino (“The Color Purple”), Yoo and the “Saltburn” trio. by Jacob Elordi, Barry Keoghan and Rosamund Pike. . Also invited to the party are two supporting actors from the prominent British film “All of Us Strangers”, Claire Foy and Paul Mescal.
Sandra Hüller earned two nominations (for lead actress in “Anatomy of a Fall,” which was among the nominations, and for supporting actress in “Zone”). Other artists with multiple nominations are Bradley Cooper (as lead actor and director of “Maestro”) and Elordi (as supporting actor in “Saltburn” and for the EE Rising Star award, voted by the public). Christopher Nolan, of course, comes up three times for “Oppenheimer,” as producer, writer and director. He did not receive any gesture for craft services.
But for Oscar watchers, how important are the BAFTAs? When it comes to best picture, they have a weight of around 39%. That's the perhaps surprisingly low percentage that the BAFTAs and Oscars have ranked in the top category since 1990 (13 out of 33). They only agreed once in the last nine years: on “Nomadland.” That 39% figure is considerably lower than, say, the Critics' Choice Awards (57%, or 16 out of 28 since its inception in 1996). PGA remains by far the best predictor (68% since 1990).
The BAFTAs and the Oscars coincide much more often when it comes to acting and directing. They've matched six of the last 10 supporting actresses, seven of the last 10 supporting actors and directors, and they're especially in tune when it comes to lead actors and actresses, matching eight of the last 10. So That's potentially good. news for acting and directing nominees.
