Unlike our East Coast brethren, we Angelenos aren’t subject to the sudden arrival of fall this time of year — our cool days are still months away, and we’re not exactly an ideal place for leaf-gazing. But there’s certainly a change in the air as August gives way to September, the school year picks up steam, and the days grow ever shorter. Maybe it’s the buzz of fall film festivals or the anticipation of awards season. The satisfaction of your favorite series returning to television. The slew of new releases, release days, exhibit openings, booths around Los Angeles.
To capture that excitement, we asked the Times staff to peer into their crystal balls and preview the culture likely to dominate watercooler conversation this season — from “The Substance,” a squeaky parable of Hollywood glamour, to “Interior Chinatown,” a clever parody of the industry’s history of Asian stereotypes, to Shaboozey, the genre-defying entertainer poised to take Fonda by storm next month.
