Elon Musk, owner of X, formerly Twitter, announced Wednesday that the social media platform now hides its users' likes on others' posts.

According BoardMusk, 52, officially made the announcement on his X account as the site update was rolling out.

Citing an explanation posted by the company's engineering account on Tuesday, Musk said: “Major change: Your Likes are now private.”

But what does the new X update change?

The new update allows users to still be able to see who liked their own posts and the posts they liked. However, they won't be able to see who has liked other people's posts.

By Wednesday, the tab on most users' profiles, which showed posts they had liked, had disappeared. NBC News reported citing an article by The edge which presented a preview of the change.

“For example, many people are deterred from liking content that may be 'disturbing' for fear of retaliation from trolls or to protect their public image. Soon you will be able to like it without worrying about who can see it.”

He added that if users now more freely like posts that interest them, X's algorithm will adapt better to them.

Musk and X echoed that reasoning for the change in later posts.

The update follows a series of policy updates Musk has introduced to the platform since taking over in 2022. The tech billionaire previously said he also plans for posts on X to only show view counts.
