Chicago authorities said two pickup trucks were involved in a deadly traffic accident in the 4200 block of South Pulaski Road in which one person was killed and six others were seriously injured.
Officials did not reveal any information about the victims' identities and ages except their gender, saying the deceased was a man.
The accident took place shortly after 2 a.m., according to Chicago police.
He also said three women and two men were taken to hospitals. His condition is reported to be critical.
Police also reported that another woman was also taken to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities did not reveal the identities of the victims.
A witness was quoted as saying in the ABCChicago report: “We saw a woman lying down. We thought she was alive, but she wasn't really moving.”
The witness also said: “Then we saw three or four other people. They were sitting upright but were carried away on stretchers.”
“I live in Pulaski, a little further south, and a lot of accidents happen there,” the witness said. “That's why it's really sad to see this continue to happen.”
People who live in the area believe it's time to find other ways to make Pulaski, which has a long history of speeding, drag racing, skidding and generally reckless driving, safer.
“It has been a very tough week on Pulaski Rd,” Ward 14 Councilwoman Jeylú Gutiérrez said in a statement.
“A few days ago I requested to meet with CDOT. Today's incident once again shows the urgency of making this stretch safer. I plan to engage CDOT, the planning department and constituents to come up with a comprehensive plan to find solutions to this problem.”
