ISLAMABAD: A lawmaker introduced a bill in the National Assembly (NA) against dual citizenship of government officials, alleging that they escape responsibility after fleeing to foreign countries after retirement.

The amendment bill was submitted by Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) legislator Noor Alam Khan to the NA Secretariat on Wednesday.

He declared that a person who has dual nationality or foreign citizenship should not have the right to be appointed as a public official.

This development comes after MNA Noor sought a constitutional amendment to impose a complete ban on the appointment of judges to the higher judiciary who have dual nationalities.

On Tuesday, the legislator also presented to the AN Secretariat a Constitutional (Amendment) Bill, 2024 that seeks modifications to Articles 177, 193 and 208 of the Constitution, closing all legal avenues for the appointment of those judges, who have foreign nationality. .

The bill clearly states that a dual national will not be appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court (SC) or the High Court (HC).

He also sought to block the passage of appointments of foreign citizens as civil servants and judicial officers.

It also said: “Those who hold dual nationality of foreign States, putting the interest of the country of their origin at stake.”

Urging the legislature to enact the proposed law, the JUI-F lawmaker said there is a need to ensure loyalty of judges in light of Article 5 of the Constitution, and his proposed amendments will achieve the objectives.
