  • The authorities prohibit the entry of guests due to the expected protests.
  • PPP and PML-N emerge as the largest parties with 11 and 10 seats respectively.

The inaugural session of the Balochistan Assembly is scheduled for 3 pm and the newly elected members will take oath as legislators of the provincial assembly today.

According to the Assembly Secretariat, Zamrak Khan Achakzai has been appointed president of the session and the authorities have banned the entry of guests in light of the expected protests and the prevailing law and order situation in the province.

The 51 members, elected in general seats, who will be sworn in today include members of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), lawmakers who have become the largest parties in the 65- Member chamber.

The assembly includes 11 seats reserved for women and three for minorities, while the PPP has 11 seats and the PML-N has 10 seats.

Meanwhile, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) have 10 and five seats, respectively.

Furthermore, as many as six independent candidates also made it to the Balochistan Assembly along with the National Party (NP) and the Balochistan National Party (BNP), which won three and one seats respectively.

After their oaths, the legislators, in the session that will continue in the coming days, will vote on the election of the president and vice president of the House, followed by the election of the prime minister.

With a divided provincial assembly where no political party managed to secure a simple majority in the February 8 elections, the PPP and PML-N could come together to form their government as they have already agreed to form a coalition government at the Centre.

The inaugural session of the Balochistan Assembly comes as the newly elected members of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly will also take oath today.

The Sindh and Punjab Assemblies have already administered oath to their members, who have elected their speakers, vice-presidents and chief ministers.
