'AGT' viewers break unlikely underwear world record

We see London, we see France, we see… the underwear of the audience of “America's Got Talent”?

“AGT” broke a Guinness World Record on Tuesday night’s episode: the record for the most people wearing underwear on their heads for at least one minute.

Nicolas “Nick” Manning, a contestant from Australia, came to “AGT” with the initial intention of breaking the record for the most pairs of underwear worn, one pair at a time, in 30 seconds.

“Ever since I was little, I always wanted to be the best in the world at something,” Manning told the crowd.

The current record is 23 pairs in 30 seconds, which Manning set last July. In his attempt to beat his own record, he planned for the 24th pair to be a pair of gold boxers.

“We’re going for gold in Olympic year,” said celebrity judge Howie Mandel.

The audience cheered him on in his attempt, but Manning fell two pairs short of a new record. But he didn't end the night there; he wanted to try to break another world record, one that included the audience, the judges and the stage crew.

“There is a record number of people gathered in one place with underwear on their heads,” Manning told the crowd. The record was 355 participants.

The underwear was to be worn for a full minute, under the supervision of a Guinness judge. Suddenly, the audience and judges, plus host Terry Crews, pulled out white underwear and put it on their heads. Crews even led the crowd in a chant for judge Simon Cowell to put underwear on his head as well (he reluctantly did).

More than 1,200 people participated. The room erupted in cheers when the total was announced, but spectators soon became nervous about the judges' reactions to Manning's audition.

“I understand that a lot of people are fascinated by these records. For some reason, I'm not interested in seeing them, so I didn't like it,” said judge Sofia Vergara.

“Well, he failed at the first one and he succeeded at the second one,” Cowell said. “But, to be honest, I didn’t think it would be that hard to beat that record.”

So all four judges, including Heidi Klum, gave their negative opinion and Manning failed to advance in the competition, but received a huge amount of support from the audience as she left the stage.
