'Agatha All Along's 'The Witch's Way,' Coven Members, and More, Explained

Agatha Harkness is going down, down, down the Witch's Path.

In Episode 3 of “Agatha All Along,” which hit Disney+ on Wednesday, the eponymous witch and her newly formed coven began their journey down the legendary Witches’ Path. Things got off to a bad start.

For Agatha, played by Kathryn Hahn, the mission appears to be primarily about regaining the powers she lost to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) during the events of “WandaVision.” Her traveling companions, which include the mysterious Teen (Joe Locke), Lilia Calderu (Patti LuPone), Jennifer Kale (Sasheer Zamata) and Alice Wu-Gulliver (Ali Ahn), each have their own reasons for accompanying her.

While the magical series is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and contains its fair share of unexpected surprises, minimal knowledge of previous films and series is required to follow along. But for those interested in learning more about the lore surrounding the show, here are the comic book backstories of key characters and settings.

What is the Witches' Path?

Agatha and her ragtag group of (mostly) witches officially begin their quest in Episode 3, attempting to reach the end of the Witches' Path. According to the ballad they sang to get there, the path is “wild and wicked” and they can expect to travel “through many miles of tricks and trials.”

In the comics, the Witch's Path was introduced in the “Scarlet Witch” series by James Robinson and various artists that ran from 2015 to 2017. It is a mystical realm that can only be accessed by those who use magic. In the story, Wanda enters the Witch's Path a couple of times, accompanied by the spirit of Agatha, during her travels to discover why witchcraft is broken. In order to cure witchcraft, Wanda walked the path farther than anyone else and had to face various magical creatures and demons along the way. It was a grueling quest, but it led to Agatha being resurrected when it was all over.

Hopefully, reaching the end of the Witch's Path will lead to a certain someone coming back to life in “Agatha All Along.”

Who is in Agatha's coven?

Accompanying Agatha and the mysterious teenager on the Witches' Trail is the coven they formed in Episode 2. Initial members include Lilia Calderu, a fortune-telling witch; Jennifer Kale, a potions expert; Alice Wu-Gulliver, a protector witch; and Sharon Davis, aka Mrs. Hart.

Most of Agatha's coven appears to be inspired by characters that have appeared in Marvel comics. Jennifer KaleFor example, she is a sorceress who first appeared in an issue of the horror comic “Adventure into Fear” in the 1970s. She has been affiliated with characters such as Man-Thing (the plant creature who appeared in the special “Werewolf by Night”), Howard the Duck (who appeared in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films) and Doctor Strange.

In the comics, Alice Wu-Gulliver Alice is a police detective and magical protector known as “Wu.” She is introduced in a 2016 issue of “Scarlet Witch” when Wanda travels to Hong Kong to defeat a dark warlock. Alice, whose mother was Hong Kong's magical guardian before her, keeps her abilities a secret by using enchanted weapons.

The comic book version of Lilia Calderu He first appeared in an issue of “Marvel Premiere” in the 1970s. He hasn’t made that many appearances, but he has crossed paths with characters who have appeared in the MCU like Wanda, Doctor Strange, and Baron Mordo.

What's up with Mrs. Hart and Teen?

Mrs. Hart, whose real name is Sharon Davis, is a character who appeared in “WandaVision.” While not much is known about her, it seems she is particularly skilled at maintaining her garden, drinking wine, and rolling with the punches when aggressive witches are involved.

The teenager's true identity remains a secret thanks to the stealth spell that prevents others from hearing any identifying information about him, including his real name. The series seems to suggest that he might be related in some way to a witch that viewers are familiar with, but this remains to be confirmed.

Who is Nicholas Scratch?

In Episode 1, a bewitched Agatha peers into what appears to be a child's room in her house. In addition to some drawings, there is a nameplate bearing the name of someone named Nicholas Scratch, Agatha's son.

In comics, Scratch has been depicted as a supervillain. He was introduced in the Fantastic Four comics in the 1970s as the leader of a secret witch village called New Salem. Sometime after Agatha left New Salem, Scratch convinced the town's magical inhabitants that his mother had betrayed them and revealed her existence to the outside world. He had her kidnapped (along with the child she had been entrusted to care for) for trial and execution, but his plan was thwarted by the Fantastic Four.

Since then, Scratch has been associated with other villains such as Dormammu, who appeared in 2016’s “Doctor Strange,” and Mephisto, who has yet to formally appear in the MCU. (Marvel’s First Family — comprised of Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm and Ben Grimm — will make their official MCU debut in “Fantastic Four: First Steps,” scheduled for 2025.)

Who are the Salem Seven?

Agatha and her newly formed coven escape into Witch Lane as a mysterious group of hunters launches their attack on the currently powerless witch's house. As per Rio's warning, the group is known as the Salem Seven.

In the comics, Nicholas Scratch transformed his children into a super-powered group known as Salem's Seven to carry out his plan to execute Agatha for treason in New Salem. Therefore, Salem's Seven are Agatha's grandchildren. While the group started out as villains, they also worked alongside heroes like the Fantastic Four and the Scarlet Witch. Viewers will have to wait and see if there are any familial ties to the Salem Seven.

What's happening with Rio Vidal?

While there has been much speculation about the witch who let Agatha live after she regained her memories, no official connection has been established between Rio and an existing comic book character. For now, viewers will have to settle for imagining what could have happened in Rio and Agatha's past to foster their strained relationship — at least until the pair reunite.
