DETROIT – volkswagen Workers at a plant in Tennessee filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board to vote to join the United Auto Workers, the union announced Monday.

The filing comes after a “vast majority of Volkswagen workers have signed union cards in just 100 days,” the union said, marking a major milestone in the labor group's organizing drives at non-union auto plants in the US. US

Previously, the UAW had failed to organize foreign automakers in the U.S. More recently, Volkswagen and Nissan plants failed to achieve the support needed to unionize. In 2019, VW workers at the Chattanooga, Tennessee plant rejected union representation in a vote of 833 to 776.

The Chattanooga plant is Volkswagen's only assembly plant in the United States and employs more than 4,000 auto workers who would be eligible to vote for union representation.

A VW spokesperson did not immediately respond for comment.

VW is one of 13 non-union automakers in the United States that the UAW set its sights on late last year after landing record contracts with Detroit automakers.

The campaign covers nearly 150,000 autoworkers at BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Lucid, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Nissan, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, Toyota, Volkswagen and Volvo.
