Former US President Donald Trump challenged the $83.3 million defamation verdict in the E Jean Carroll case by filing an appeal with the US Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in Manhattan. Reuters reported.

Carroll accused Trump of calling her a liar after claiming he raped her decades ago, leading to the jury's Jan. 26 decision.

Trump secured $91.63 million bail from Federal Insurance Co to support the appeal revolving around the Manhattan jury's June 2019 finding that Trump defamed Carroll by denying her mid-2000 rape allegation. 1990s.

The jury awarded Carroll $18.3 million in compensatory damages, including $11 million in reputational damages and $7.3 million in emotional damages, along with $65 million in punitive damages. Trump argues that he should not owe anything or that the amounts awarded should be significantly reduced.

In addition to this case, Trump faces a $454.2 million verdict in a civil fraud case, and is offering bail of $100 million, which New York Attorney General Letitia James insists should cover the entire sentence.

U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan, who is overseeing Carroll's trial, has not yet ruled on Trump's motions for a new trial and damage reduction.

Trump's legal team maintains that Kaplan's decision to exclude Trump's testimony about his mental state affected the verdict and that the jury instructions on malice were erroneous.

The lengthy appeals process could last several years, as both Trump and Carroll are in their 70s.
