Protesters remove portrait of Mujibur Rahman from Bangladesh consulate in US

After Sheikh Hasina resigned as Bangladesh's prime minister on Monday, protesters in the United States stormed the Bangladeshi consulate in New York.

A video of the incident posted on social media shows a crowd of protesters storming the building and tearing down portraits of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founder of Bangladesh. India today reported.

In Bangladesh, protesters also toppled the statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The South Asian country has been grappling with unrest for several weeks over protests over job quotas, which recently escalated to demand the resignation of the 76-year-old daughter of the late Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who ruled the country for 15 years.

The violent uprising left hundreds dead.

Bangladesh's military stepped in to take charge, giving Hasina 45 minutes to resign and flee the country on Monday before protesters stormed the parliament building.

Bangladesh is currently awaiting the formation of a new government after Hasina escaped to India on a military plane and is reportedly considering seeking asylum in the UK.

Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, denied the reports and said she has no plans to return to Bangladesh either.

Leaders of student protests in Bangladesh met with army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman on Tuesday and called for Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, who has agreed to be a senior adviser to the interim government, to lead the interim government.
