The Taliban government of Afghanistan announced the launch of an American citizen arrested on Sunday, a week after the authorities also released a British old woman.
In a statement, the ministry identified the detainee as Amiri and said that he had been delivered to Adam Boehler, Washington's special envoy on the hostages.
Boehler made a visit to Kabul earlier this month to discuss the possibility of an exchange of prisoners with the Taliban government.
“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan released an American citizen named Amiri from prison today,” said the Ministry of Defense of Afghanistan in X.
“The Afghan government does not see the problems of citizens from a political angle and makes it clear that you can find ways to solve problems through diplomacy.”
Little is known about Amiri's case, since it has not been widely informed.
The British Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, were released from a Kabul prison on September 20 after almost eight months arrested.
Qatar helped mediate both releases, according to the Taliban government.
