Perth Airport has welcomed the announcement that Star Alliance member South African Airways (SAA) will restart services between its Johannesburg hub and Perth from 28 April 2024.
The airport’s aviation and commercial director Kate Holsgrove said it was great to see SAA back in Perth three years after the impacts of the pandemic.
“The direct flight will operate three times a week on the airline’s Airbus A340-300 aircraft delivering 78,936 seats to the Perth market.
“Once flights resume, we will continue to work closely with South African Airways with the aim of rebuilding daily service.
“The return of South African Airways services between Perth and Johannesburg also provides an alternative itinerary for those traveling to South America with flights also available to Sao Paulo, Brazil, from Johannesburg or Cape Town with South African Airways.”
SAA will operate the Johannesburg-Perth service on an A340-300 that has a total of 253 seats configured with 38 business class seats and 215 economy class seats.
Flights will initially operate three times a week, departing Perth at 2.40pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
SAA almost went into liquidation during the pandemic, but has since recovered.
The airline currently operates only a fraction of its previous fleet, consisting of six A320 aircraft for its shorter regional flights, two A330-300 and one A340-300, with a second due to be reactivated in the near future.
