Hong Kong Airport Reports November Traffic; Expects to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024
Dark/light mode (12/28/23) Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) handled 3.8 million passengers and 27,855 flight movements in November 2023, representing year-on-year increases of 2.6 times and 104%, respectively.
All passenger segments saw strong growth compared to November 2022, with passenger traffic to and from Southeast Asia, mainland China and Japan recording the largest increases.
Cargo throughput also maintained strong growth momentum, with HKIA recording an overall increase of 17.8% to 417,000 tonnes with a 31.8% increase in exports compared to the same month last year.
Cargo traffic to and from key trading regions in North America, the Middle East and Europe saw the most significant growth during the month.

During the first 11 months of the year, passenger volume increased to 35 million, approximately eight times more than in the same period in 2022, while flight movements doubled to 246,240. Cargo volume increased slightly by 1.7% to 3.9 million tonnes year-on-year.
In a period of 12 consecutive months, passenger volume at HKIA saw an eight-fold increase year-on-year to 36.8 million, while flight movements increased by 90.6% to 262,015. Cargo throughput saw a 1.4% decline to 4.3 million tonnes.
HKIA passenger traffic and flight movements return to 80% of pre-pandemic levels
As of December 27, 2023, passenger traffic at HKIA had recovered to 80% of the pre-pandemic level, in line with the Hong Kong Airport Authority's forecast.
During the Christmas holiday travel peak, the airport served more than 160,000 passengers daily on consecutive December 22 and 23. The 164,000 passengers served on December 23 constitute a new post-pandemic daily record.
Flight movements have exceeded 80% of the pre-pandemic level since mid-December and a new post-pandemic record of 1,034 flight movements in a single day was recorded on December 23.
Passenger traffic at HKIA is expected to fully recover to the pre-pandemic level by the end of 2024.
