Birmingham Airport employs extra staff to check liquid compliance – Business Traveler

Birmingham Airport is employing extra staff in a bid to improve passenger journeys through security.

There have been several reports in recent days. long lines at airport securityas a result of confusion over rules on liquids in carry-on luggage.

Earlier this month, the Department of Transportation temporarily reintroduced restrictions limiting air travelers to carrying liquids no larger than 100ml in their carry-on luggage.

The gradual rollout of next-generation 3D scanners had led to several UK airports easing restrictions, meaning customers could carry containers holding up to two liters of liquid.

But the DfT reintroduced the 100ml limit nationwide from Sunday June 9 to “allow further improvements to be made to the new monitoring systems”.

DfT reintroduces 100ml liquid limit at six UK airports

Birmingham had completed the installation and switching on of its new scanning equipment in May this year, but the relaxed two-litre rule had never been introduced at the airport. as it had been waiting for regulatory approval to remove the 100 ml restriction.

However, the airport said it has been removing around 1.5 tonnes of liquids, pastes and gels each day since June 9 to ensure customers comply with government regulations.

As a result, it has opened an expanded temporary structure housing multiple “liquid screening stations,” staffed by external “customer service specialists” tasked with ensuring customers comply with the 100ml rules.

The airport highlighted that new scanning equipment means electrical devices can now remain in carry-on luggage when passing through security. There is now also no limit on the number of containers of up to 100 ml that can be carried in hand luggage, and it is no longer necessary to place these containers with a transparent plastic bag.

“These new measures are designed to give passengers a smoother and easier experience through security,” said Nick Barton, CEO of Birmingham Airport.

“Our expanded teams will be on hand to explain the new liquid rules we must all follow and help passengers prepare for safety. The more we can do together to reduce the number of non-compliant bags, the more we can reduce queues at security checkpoints.

“Our additional teams aim to help customers travel through the airport with minimal inconvenience arising from these restrictions this summer.

“As always, our advice is that you only go when your airline has told you to do so and remember that you can only carry containers of 100ml or less of liquids, pastes and gels in hand luggage.”
