There's no doubt that Nvidia has been the company that has benefited the most from the recent push and revolution in AI, having recently become the third most valuable company on the planet, ahead of Alphabet and Amazon, and for a time in June, even holding the top spot, above Microsoft and Apple.
All of the big tech companies want to be in the AI space, but few want to be dependent on Nvidia, so many are looking for alternatives wherever possible. Microsoft and OpenAI are reportedly in the process of planning a data center project that would include a potentially AMD-powered AI supercomputer called “Stargate.”
Now him Information OpenAI says it has held talks with several chip designers, including Broadcom, about developing a new AI chip to challenge Nvidia.
Bigger than AMD and Intel
Broadcom is best known for designing, developing and supplying a broad range of semiconductor and infrastructure software solutions, with products used in data center networking, home connectivity, broadband access, telecommunications equipment, smartphones and base stations.
It is currently ranked as the 13th most valuable company in the world, putting it above better-known tech giants such as Samsung, AMD, Intel, Arm, IBM and Qualcomm.
It is unknown at this time whether OpenAI's conversation with Broadcom and other suitors relates to Stargate, but Information suggests that whatever the final result, it's unlikely to rival anything Nvidia is making right now, given the years of research and development (and money) that would be required.
However, OpenAI has reportedly hired ex-Googlers who have experience developing Tensor processors, that's how serious the company is about having its own hardware.
