This is another really clever Connections puzzle. I'm a big fan. All the words are movies, obviously, but none of them really have a cinematic connection, which may well have puzzled you in the same way it initially confused me. I spent too much time thinking about what movies Jack Nicholson might have acted in other than CHINATOWN, or whether JACK BLACK had acted in anything other than BE KIND, REWIND. Had any been specific Oscar winners? Were any released the same year? Etc.
There may be some connections there (I'm not enough of a film buff to know without checking), but it was only when I changed my thinking that I started to make progress. I solved the two hardest ones first, noticing that four of them ended in a unit of measurement for the blue group, then I got the animal connection for the purple one.
The rhyming group, green, was pretty easy to find after that, which was left in yellow. This was supposedly the easiest of the four, based on color, but as a non-New Yorker (and non-American) I guarantee you I wouldn't have solved it if it weren't by default, because I had no idea DUMBO was a region of New York . . It's true that this appears in the New York Times, but I still feel it's a little provincial for the NYT to include it, since they must know that millions of people around the world play Connections. Couldn't they have chosen something else?

What are NYT connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that share something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don't technically need to solve the final question since you'll be able to answer it through a process of elimination. What's more, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a little breathing room.
However, it's a little more complicated than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, be careful with homophones and other puns that could disguise answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
