Today's NYT Connections (Set #443): The Answers
The answers to today's Connections game, number 443, are…
- YELLOW: EXPLOSIVE SOUND BOOM, CRASH, ROAR, THUNDER!
- GREEN: QUALITY OF CHILI FIRE, HEAT, KICK, SPICES
- BLUE: CLASSIC BARBER SHOP ITEMS BRUSH, CAPE, CUTTERS, GEL
- PURPLE: TYPES OF CARDS BASEBALL, MAGIC, SET, TAROT
- My rating: Hard
- My rating: 3 mistakes
Phew! I narrowly avoided another Connections mistake today, but it was largely due to luck. Once again, I missed the red herrings: I thought maybe there was a basketball connection (HEAT, THUNDER, SCISSORS, MAGIC), but I was wrong, or that there was something to do with wizards/witches (CAP, MAGIC, TAROT, FIRE, etc.), but I was (rightly) even more wrong. And finally, I guessed a hairdressing-related one with BRUSH, SCISSORS, GEL, and, ahem, SET, and I was almost right.
Since I had no more chances left, I needed to get it right every time, and looking around, I saw the yellow group “Explosive Sound.” Going back to the hair salons and barbershops, I added CAPE and got the blue one, then I put together four spicy-sounding words for the hot chili group. It was a close race, but I made it to the finish line.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games created by the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different level of difficulty: green is easy, yellow is a little harder, blue is usually quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
The plus side is that you don't technically need to solve the last one, as you'll be able to answer it by process of elimination. Plus, you can make up to four mistakes, which gives you a bit of wiggle room.
However, it is a bit more complex than something like Wordle and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trick you with tricks. For example, beware of homophones and other wordplay that could disguise the answers.
It can be played for free via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile devices.
