- Apple is paying $ 95 million to resolve a collective demand for Siri
- If you think you are eligible, you must send a claim before July 2
- Apple has denied all irregularities in solving the case
In January, Apple agreed to solve a collective claim related to its Siri voice assistant. The case saw some owners of Apple devices affirm that Siri had revealed their private conversations to advertisers, after “unwanted activations of Siri”.
Apple denied all irregularities and agreed to solve the case to “avoid additional litigation” (more about that below). But the outcome of the demand 'López vs Apple Inc' means that, if he has and used an Apple device between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024, it could be a small portion of the payment.
Those that are eligible could be a line for a maximum payment of $ 100 (that is $ 20 per device, for up to five Siri devices). It is not exactly a lottery jackpot, but it is worth investigating whether he believes that he has been affected by involuntarily activating Siri during a private conversation during that period.
As the Verge reports, many of those affected will have received an email entitled “Lopez Voice Assistant Sastlement” (from the address '[email protected]'). Despite sounding as spam, this is a genuine email that contains details such as its 'claimant identification code' and more.
But even if he did not receive this, he can also send a claim. Here is a quick breakdown of what happened, how Apple answered and how to present a claim if you think it has been affected …
What happened?
The demanding demanders alleged that the “confidential or private communications” were “obtained by Apple and/or shared with third parties as a result of an involuntary Siri activation.” According to the demand home page, that took place at some point between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024.
But how? Apple has always maintained that iPhones do not 'listen' to their owners, apart from when Wake's words like 'Hey, Siri' are used. Well, the key is that phrase “Activation of involuntary Siri”.
The plaintiffs say that Siri not only tune in in private conversations by mistake, perhaps Malying a word of vigil, but also used that information to subsequently activate advertisements.
Once again, Apple denies that this is possible, stating that “Siri's data has never been used to create marketing profiles and that anyone has never been sold for any purpose.”
However, as Reuters reported, two plaintiffs said that their mentions about Air Jordan Sneakers and Olive Garden restaurants resulted in advertisements for these products, while another plaintiff said they received ads for a brand surgical treatment after talking to their doctor.
What did Apple say?
Despite accepting to pay $ 95 million to resolve the Siri demand, Apple was quite optimistic in its response, and did not admit irregularities, despite resolving the demand.
Apple told us that “Siri's data has never been used to create marketing profiles and that anyone has never been sold for any purpose,” and added that the data collected are only used to improve the virtual assistant.
In a separate statement, he added: “Apple resolved this case to avoid additional litigation so that we can advance the concerns about the third -party qualification that we address in 2019. We use Siri data to improve Siri, and we are constantly developing technologies to make Siri even more private.”
That is quite emphatic then, but the agreement means that potentially millions of owners of Apple devices could be eligible for a claim, here we show how to verify if you are one of them.
How to claim
If you think it is eligible for a payment in the 'López V Apple Inc' demand, you must use the official complaint form and send it for July 2, 2025.
You must comply with some quite specific criteria to be eligible for payment. That criterion is below and the claim form asks you to confirm the entire oath:
- Between September 17, 2014 and December 31, 2024, he bought or owned a Siri device in the United States, and Siri enabled that device
- Experienced an “involuntary Siri activation” in that period
- That involuntary activation of Siri took place “during a conversation aimed at being confidential and private”
You can make claims for up to five Siri devices: these may include iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBooks, IMACS, Homepods, Ipod Touch or Apple TV.
As mentioned above, many of those who are potentially eligible will have received an email entitled “Lacz Voice Assistant Sastlement”. But you do not necessarily need to have received that email to make a claim, if not, simply click “new claim” in the claim form and enter your data from there.
