Whether you've been dreaming of posting a longer carousel post on Instagram – be it photos and videos of your dog, sharing your latest epic travel adventure, or maybe just a monthly dump – the social media giant's latest feature update will make your dream a little bit closer.
Meta-owned Instagram announced today that feed, carousel posts, can now hold up to 20 photos or videos. This is effectively double the previous limit of 10, and while you might not use it on a daily basis, it's handy to be able to share more if you choose to do so.
Not only do these types of gallery posts have a neat effect that allows you to quickly swipe through using the dots below the photo, but they are also a great way to share more similar content in a single post. Monthly dumps, with the title “July Roundup” or “August So Far,” have become quite popular on the platform, and those who post monthly dumps are likely to get the most mileage out of this.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t a number you have to hit — you can create and publish a carousel post with anywhere from 1 to 20 photos, videos, or both types of media. The new limit is close to TikTok’s limit of 35, which could be seen as an attempt by Instagram to increase engagement compared to the app that’s mostly known for vertical videos.
This latest change is already rolling out globally to all Instagram users, and may already be an option for you if you're trying to post. Instagram also seems to be on a roll with updates and announcements, as in late July it rolled out “AI Studio” to help the platform's top users engage with their followers.
