As you may have noticed, Deadpool and Wolverine opens this week and it's a big deal. Marvel's fifth film of the year brings with it a ton of anticipation from fans of the fourth-wall-breaking comedic actress, and I'm literally heading to the IMAX theater to see it as soon as I finish this article.
If, like me, you want to make sure you get the most enjoyment out of the Merc with a Mouth and his hilarious, intense sidekick, you might want to watch these three movies on Disney Plus first. Because two things are certain: there will be a lot of references, and no one has time to watch all the relevant X-Men and Marvel movies before they hit theaters this week. But in the rare case that you do, here’s our guide on how to watch Marvel movies in order and how to watch the X-Men movies in order.

I know: duh. But while it is absolutely possible to enjoy Deadpool and Wolverine on its own terms (even though I myself have read the first reviews), the first Dead pool The movie is so funny that it's a pleasure to rewatch it over and over again. It offers the complete origin story of Wade Wilson, a very touching and tragic romance, and plenty of visual gags that make me laugh so hard that my kids are embarrassed and threaten to disown me.

The tenth X-Men film and the final installment of the Glutton The trilogy is quite dark and feels more like a tragic western than a brightly colored special effects-fueled fight fest. It's the superhero movie as art. Unforgiven with adamantium claws, and the description “No Country for Old Men X-Men” sums it up beautifully. And that seriousness, that weight, that sense of being “An Important Movie” sets Wolverine up wonderfully for the silliness and mockery of Deadpool vs Wolverine.

The second Dead pool The movie and its hilarious family-friendly version with Fred Savage aren't as good as the first. But there's a montage of flying superheroes that is genuinely one of the funniest things I've ever seen in a theater, and that section had me laughing so hard and so uncontrollably that I thought I was going to be kicked out of the movie. It's gloriously silly, does a wonderful job of showing how the other X-Men view our antihero, and is exactly the amuse bouche you need before you go see the third installment this week.
