We've been waiting for OLED MacBooks for quite some time, especially since the launch of Apple's iPad Pro M4 models with new high-end displays. Naturally, you'd think the MacBook Pro range would do the same, and we previously had hopes of that when the M3 MacBooks were launched late last year. However, it now looks like we might finally see OLED MacBook Pros in 2026, which may tempt more users towards these high-end laptops.
As Wccftech reports, according to analyst firm Omdia, OLED technology will apparently debut in MacBook Pro models in 2026, making the laptops thinner, as OLED displays have their own individually illuminated pixels and do not require a backlit panel.
We're told these MacBooks will use the same tandem OLED displays as the iPad Pros, and “tandem” refers to having two OLED panels stacked on top of each other (for better brightness and color clarity).
Why not sooner rather than later?
Ricky Part, senior principal analyst for displays research at Omdia, published his predictions for the future of Apple displays in a blog poststating that: “Apple is very likely to incorporate OLED in its MacBook Pro models from 2026. This move could lead to a significant increase in demand for OLED within the laptop market, potentially reaching more than 60 million units by 2031” .
As you can see, Part suspects that the move to OLED displays will increase the appeal of the Apple MacBook Pro, and I'm inclined to agree. Who typically uses MacBook Pros? Artists, videographers, filmmakers, animators, editors, and many other creative or visually demanding use cases would greatly benefit from a sharper, better, more vibrant OLED display.
If that's the case, then why would it take Apple so long to jump on the OLED bandwagon? Well, possibly because the panels are expensive to manufacture and the company will have to rely on a much higher level of demand for MacBook Pros to justify starting the process. There is also the matter of securing production facilities for the screens.
As we said before, Apple has just brought its M4 chips to the iPad Pro models, so it would make sense to wait for a new chipset to be added in the future, or other major updates and features, along with the introduction of a display. OLED. to make a new MacBook Pro worth it. Higher production costs trickle down to the consumer, so we expect an OLED MacBook Pro to be one of the most expensive laptops on the market, meaning it'll really have to feel worth the outlay.
