For the off-schedule debut of Tokyo-based brand Masu, designer Shinpei Goto left a box printed with a devilish face on each seat. Inside was a shiny toy shaped like a piece of cake and candles.
Point? Do not judge a book by its cover.
“I see beauty in what people often see as dirty things. There is goodness in everything. They motivate me to design the feelings of discomfort and anger in life. We transformed that frustration into humor and kindness to put together our collection,” Goto said backstage through a translator.
Set in the Le Consulat art space in eastern Paris, the exhibition began with a series of dark looks. Highlights in this section included a leather biker with metal chains hanging from her shoulders, a velvety glow-in-the-dark polo, cropped caps that leave a devilish shadow on the face, and cake box-inspired crossbody bags.
The collection transitioned into a more streetwear-focused part, offering a cropped denim jacket with cigarette holes, rhinestone flared jeans, and a work jacket covered in a spiderweb pattern, before going downright angelic with models with number numbers. iridescent sequins closing the show.
Coupled with the presence of Verdy, the mastermind behind Backpink's “Born Pink” world tour last year, this range of realistic and kitsch products made an intriguing debut.
