Fall 2024 Runway, Fashion Show and Ready-to-Wear Collection Review

The Met Gala 2023, and the exhibition dedicated to Karl Lagerfeld's incomparable fashion career, represented a great moment for the brand, and it continues.

For his fall collection, Karl Lagerfeld design director Hun Kim interpreted the outfits worn by his VIP guests that night into more accessible versions. So the gigantic puff sleeves of Michelle Yeoh's dress deflated to become a festive white shirt, while Bryan Tyree Henry's dramatic tiered lace cape became a sexy, long evening skirt.

Also up for grabs is the bustier-style tuxedo that Lou Doillon wore to the opening of the Karl Lagerfeld hotel in Macau last year, here interpreted as a jumpsuit.

The festive part of the collection, mostly in black and white, closely fit Lagerfeld's graphic style. Consider black dress pants with a satin waist folded into a collar, or a long lurex-flecked knit dress etched with Art Deco patterns, a nod to a design period that the late German designer treasured.

“I'm going back to Paris,” Kim said, infusing the entire collection with the elevated elegance of the inhabitants of Lagerfeld's adopted city, seen in cinched-waist coats and jackets in real or faux leather, a cropped, quilted bomber jacket and a fitted jacket. Flared dress with a high neck in a neutral brown to dress up or down.

Citing her hunger for more stylish clothing in the post-pandemic era, Kim sprinkled dark crystals on men's shirts, glazed sweaters with cables at sharp angles, and jacquard fabrics with the KL logo carved into fantastic pants.

And what about Jared Leto's crazy, realistic outfit that gala night, an homage to Lagerfeld's beloved pet Birman Choupette? Choose a furry hooded jacket that also reverses to black, or an evening bag with a crouching feline as a handle.
