Wrexham go top of League 1 after a 2-0 win

Wrexham continued their positive start to League One with a 2-0 win at Peterborough on Saturday that left them joint top with Stockport and Birmingham City after four games.

A pair of first-half goals from Jack Marriott and Max Cleworth helped the team to a comfortable victory, their third of the season so far, which also maintained their unbeaten start.

Paul Mullin and Steven Fletcher came off the bench in the second half, with Mullin nearly scoring with his first touch with a well-taken volley.

It marks another solid step after two consecutive promotions from the National League to the third tier of English football, with co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney dreaming of one day reaching the Premier League.

“We have to show we are serious contenders at this level and we have done that in great style,” said Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson.

“We knew what we had to do today against a very good Peterborough team; the team's form out of possession was exceptional.

“The first goal was an example of our quality and overall it was a good win for the team and the substitutes who came on. The team was in very good shape and the structure was very good. Peterborough found it difficult to play through us.”

“We feel pretty comfortable and the lads are very happy about that. Today was another test for us.”

Wrexham are now out of the Carabao Cup after a tough clash against Sheffield United which ended in a 4-2 defeat.
