William & Mary fires coach Dane Fischer after five seasons

William & Mary has fired men's basketball coach Dane Fischer after five seasons, the school announced Sunday morning.

Fisher went 56-91 during his time at the helm.

“Coach Fischer is a person of great character and integrity, and I am grateful for everything he has done for our student-athletes. However, the time has come to change our program,” said athletic director Brian Mann. “As a university, we hold ourselves to the highest standards and are committed to competitive excellence in all of our collegiate sports programs. My focus now is identifying the right person to maintain those standards as our next men's basketball coach.”

Fischer replaced Tony Shaver in 2019, who had finished above .500 in CAA for six consecutive seasons before his ouster. The first-year head coach carried that momentum into the 2019-20 season, leading the Tribe to a second-place finish in the CAA standings, going 21-11 overall and 13-5 in the league.

However, from there everything has gone downhill. William & Mary has gone 19-45 in CAA over the past four seasons, failing to finish better than seventh in the league.

Before becoming the coach at W&M, Fischer was an assistant coach at George Mason, Bucknell and Rider.
