United States adds Josh Sargent and establishes the final 26-man team for the Copa América

U.S. men's national team head coach Gregg Berhalter announced his 26-player roster for the upcoming Copa America on Friday, and Norwich City forward Josh Sargent has recovered enough from a foot injury to be included. .

Berhalter had called 27 players to a training camp prior to the tournament that played a pair of friendlies against Colombia and Brazil.

The United States suffered a tough 5-1 defeat against The Coffee Growers in the first game before rallying to draw 1-1 with Brazil, just the second time the USMNT avoided defeat in that matchup. Sargent was not present in any of the friendlies but will now participate in his first Copa América.

LAFC midfielder Timothy Tillman is the odd player out and will return to his club. The rest of the squad was part of that training camp. Now, after a short break, the 26 players will resume training in Dallas starting June 16.

Tournament organizers recently expanded the number of players on a roster from 23 to 26. The official roster must be submitted no later than June 15. The original deadline was June 12.

The USMNT opens the group against Bolivia on Sunday, June 23 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas, then faces Panama on Thursday, June 27 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and concludes on Monday, July 1 against Uruguay at GEHA Field from Arrowhead. Stadium in Kansas City.

The tournament begins in Atlanta on June 20, when defending World Cup and Copa América champions Argentina take on Canada.

The average age of players on the American squad is 25 years and 230 days as of the day of the team's opening game against Bolivia.

It is the second youngest squad that the United States has sent in five editions of the Copa América, only behind the 2007 squad (24 years, 280 days). Eighteen of the 26 players were on the 2022 World Cup roster, nine of whom were 23 years old or younger.

The squad has an average of 27 caps, 16 of them in official competition.
