The 2024 Copa América in the US will pay a record figure of 72 million dollars: sources

This summer's Copa América will distribute a record $72 million in participation fees and prize money to tournament teams, with the winner receiving $16 million, sources told ESPN.

Each team will receive a participation fee of $2 million just for participating, and the remaining $40 million will be classified as prize money. The prize money portion is more than double the $19.5 million awarded in 2021, when winners Argentina received $6.5 million.

The tournament is being co-organized by CONMEBOL and Concacaf, the respective confederations of South America, North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

The United States is hosting this expanded edition of the Copa América for the second time, after having hosted the Copa América Centenario in 2016. On that occasion, there was a total prize pool of 21.5 million dollars, of which 6 .5 million dollars went to the winner Chile.

The teams that advance only to the quarterfinals will receive $2 million each in prizes. The fourth place team will receive $4 million, the third place team will pocket $5 million, while the losing finalist will receive $7 million. The tournament will also cover the teams' hotel, airfare and ground transportation costs.

The amount of prize money is an important incentive for participating players, beyond the honor of playing in such a prestigious tournament. This is especially true for players from the United States. Thanks to the latest collective bargaining agreement signed in 2022, American men will earn 70% of any prize money awarded.

Nine percent of the prize money the United States stands to win will go to a joint fund that will be divided equally between the USMNT and USWNT members, while the United States Soccer Federation will pocket the remaining 21%.
