Team USA's road to Olympics begins with exhibition win over Canada

In its first warm-up game for the Paris Olympics, the U.S. men's basketball team defeated Canada 86-72 on Wednesday night in Las Vegas.

Former President Obama was in the building along with many other NBA coaches and high-ranking U.S. basketball officials for the governing body's 50th anniversary celebration.

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis led Team USA in scoring, while first-time Olympian Steph Curry scored 12 points and shot 3 of 6 from 3-point range.

“We just want to win gold, no matter what it takes,” Curry said in a postgame interview. “We always talk about how no matter your stats, no matter how many minutes you play, as long as everyone on the court is committed to doing what they're asked to do, we'll be fine.”

This was the first of five exhibition games that Team USA will play before the Olympics begin on July 26.

Things started off slow for Team USA. They found themselves down by an early 10 points in the first quarter as they struggled to find a rhythm after being together just four days before the game.

Fueled by a 14-2 run in the second quarter, the United States took a 41-33 lead into halftime and never looked back.

“It was a good first game for us, we're really getting going after four days of practice,” head coach Steve Kerr said, via USA Basketball. “You could see the rust on the offensive end, a lot of turnovers in that first half especially, but I love the defensive intensity and the work on the backboard. So it was a good first effort.”

Canada's team is the first non-U.S. Olympic team to feature 10 active NBA players on its roster. Toronto Raptors' RJ Barrett led Canada in scoring with 12 points, while Dillon Brooks and Shai-Gilgeous Alexander each added 10 points.

Wednesday's game will be the only exhibition game Team USA will play on home soil. Their next game will be in Abu Dhabi, where they will face Australia next week.
