San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher signs contract extension

SAN DIEGO — Brian Dutcher, who led San Diego State to the national championship game last season, signed a contract extension that will keep him on the Aztecs' bench through the 2027-28 season.

Dutcher is in his seventh season as head coach, with a 173-55 record and 25th season overall at SDSU. He was an assistant to Steve Fisher for 18 seasons.

In a statement Wednesday, Dutcher thanked SDSU officials and added, “Our success began 25 years ago when my friend Steve Fisher came to The Mesa and, along with my assistant coaches, we have created a program that competes nationally every nights. I started training to influence the lives of young people and to be able to do it in a school and in a city that I love, is all anyone can ask for.”

The Aztecs reached their first Final Four last year, beating FAU on a Lamont Butler buzzer-beater and then losing to UConn in the championship game.

The No. 21 Aztecs fell to 22-8 and 11-6 in the Mountain West after a 62-58 loss at UNLV on Tuesday night.
