PSG send support to defender Nuno Mendes after racist abuse

Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes has been targeted with abusive and racist comments on social media after a French league match.

The club on Sunday condemned the abuse and expressed its “full support” for the Portuguese left-back, who was attacked after PSG's 3-1 win over Brest on Saturday.

Mendes, who is black, shared a racist message he received on his Instagram account.

During the match, Mendes brought down Ludovic Ajorque inside the box for a penalty that Romain Del Castillo converted to give Brest the lead.

“Paris Saint-Germain does not tolerate racism, anti-Semitism or any other form of discrimination,” the club said. “The racist insults directed at Nuno Mendes are totally unacceptable… We are working with the relevant authorities and associations to ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions.”

The president of the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernando Gomes, expressed his solidarity.

“It is deplorable that in the 21st century we still have to deal with so many prejudices and racist attitudes,” Gomes said in a statement.
